Jesus spent a lot of his time on earth teaching. Many people followed Jesus and were amazed by the things he taught. In Matthew 5:3-11, you will find one of the most famous records of his teaching referred to as the Sermon on the Mount where he taught the Beatitudes. B l essed are the poor in spirit: for their’s is the kingdom of heaven.Jesus is talking about the people who are humble in spirit and do not think too highly of themselves. Jesus said that whosoever humbles themselves as a little child, they will be the greatest in His kingdom.B lessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. We will all face heartaches in our lifetime. God’s promise to us is that He will comfort us during those times. We don’t have to worry or fear what we may face, God will be there to comfort out heart and give us peace beyond understanding.B lessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Another word for meek is humility. Whatever we are or can do in this life is only because of the power of God. If we do anything at all for God it is because He has given us the power to do, it is nothing that we can do within ourselves.B lessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. As we hunger after natural food, we should also hunger after the things of God. We need to hunger after “spiritual food” which would be the things that God’s Word tells us to do and be obedient to that.
B lessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. A merciful person will forgive other people for the wrong they may do to them. As we forgive others, God will forgive us.B lessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. We need to fill our hearts and minds with good things. God tells us to think upon good things like His Word. If we fill our hearts and minds with evil things like watching bad television shows, listening to the wrong things, and even reading the wrong things, we can defile ourselves.B lessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. If you like for people to get along, and not tell stories on others or repeat what someone else may have said about them, you are a peacemaker.B lessed are they that are persecuted for righteousness’ sake for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven. If we serve God with all of our heart, not worrying about what other people say about us, not worrying about it if people laugh at us, not giving up on serving God, we will see the kingdom of heaven when we leave this world.B lessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Not everybody will like you. Not everybody is going to say good things about you. In fact, you will be made fun of, lied on, and talked about for doing what is right.
The important thing is that we do what is right in God’s eyes so that we can
live with Him one day. With God’s help, we can all have a good attitude.
Some people may believe that they can’t help the way they act. But that is
not true. With God’s help, and He is the one that can help us, we can
control what we think and the way we act. Just as Jesus was meek, obedient,
pure, merciful, and forgiving, He expects us to be the same way. He will
give us the power to do just that.
